Confident From The Spiritual: by Dustin Hawkins

In order to overcome addiction, one needs to keep their spiritual condition high. By establishing a spiritual routine they will develop a level of spirituality that fills the void left by the absence of their addiction.

A lot of people don’t grow spiritually because they have no plan for spiritual growth. Some days they pray / meditate, some days they read / audiobooks, some days they create spiritual experiences (walks, hiking, family), and some days they forget all together. They lack diligence and diligence is what it takes to capture CONFIDENCE.

An effective routine includes both a morning and evening routine while seeking the guidance from your higher power throughout the day.

  • Morning Routine

    1. Wake up early in the morning and direct your thoughts towards gratitude / higher power (prayer).

    2. Be thankful for the lessons you learn through personal trials.

    3. Be thankful for family and friends.

    4. Be grateful to your higher power for helping you improve your life and ask for continued support.

    5. After a shower and while eating, study your spiritual book and reflect on your impressions and goals. This journal help you to remember the powerful concepts. As time goes on you will have a powerful tool to reflect on when times get tough.

    6. As you prepare to face the outside world, take a moment within a quiet place to pray and meditate.

    7. Now as you go throughout your day, keep your thoughts anchored with a positive attitude and a determination to recognize spiritual intervention in your surroundings. Make a conscious effort to live in a way that does not offend a spiritual character (be meek and lowly; no vulgarity; be patient, kind, and helpful; and think about being less selfish and more helpful, etc..) In what way must we act to keep our spiritual condition high?

    8. Throughout the day, remain humble and patient. Be mindful of the language you use and the words you speak. Be cautious of the media, music and television content you view. Be aware of how you treat others. Remember, it is through kindness that you can experience a euphoric feeling of service.

  • The Night Routine

    1. As you prepare to end the day, nourish your body with a healthy meal. Nutrition plays a huge role when seeking a spiritual life because if your mind body and spirit aren’t in harmony then your mood is easily affected and altered. This proper balance of fat, protein, and carbs leads to increased mental acuity and balanced hormone levels, which helps with depressive thinking.

    2. Keep humble and low key as you flow into the night routine; don’t lose track of keeping your thinking close to you. A good audiobook while on a walk is a solid spiritual practice.

    3. Slow down the fast pace of the day by taking time to read your spiritual book and reflect on the choices you made throughout the day (step 10). You could even do a step 10 in prayer if that is your thing.

    4. Stay present around those that you love, and by all means put your phone away and seek to have beautiful conversations. Each night, think about going into a spiritual direction before you go to bed.
